In the past agriculture has played and will continue to play a dominant role in the growth of Indian economy in the foreseeable future. It represents the largest sector producing around 28 percent of the GDP, is the largest employer providing more than 60 percent of the jobs and is the prime arbiter of living standards for seventy percent of India’s population living in the rural areas. Agriculture has a significant role in the socio-economic fabric of India. Today, India ranks second worldwide in farm output. In the year, since it’s Independence India has made immense progress towards food security. Indian population has tripled and food grain production more than quadrupled.

Before the mid 1960’s, India relied on imports and food aid to meet domestic requirement. Green Revolution played a significant role in the early 1960 led to increase in food grain production of India. It was after green revolution. India became the exported of various food grain, vegetables egg, poultry etc.
